Maura exceeds nomination requirement by 3,000 signatures!
May 2005
Boston Mayoral Candidate Maura Hennigan officially kicked off her campaign
when she submitted more than 6,300 signatures on Monday, May 23. The number
more than doubled the 3,000 signatures needed to earn a nomination.
Hennigan credited the hard work and help of dedicated campaign volunteers
for the success.
“We set a campaign goal of 6,000 signatures and we beat even that,” said
Campaign Manager Mitch Kates. “This shows that Maura’s supporters are
behind her. At this early stage in the race, this shows Maura is a
strong candidate. I am pleased with this achievement and I think it gets
our campaign off to a running start,”
Hennigan is the only challenger who collected the needed number of
signatures and will face off against incumbent Thomas Menino in the
November election. Menino collected 22,000 signatures, however the number
is misleading. According to reports in both The Boston Globe (May 19, 2005)
and The Boston Herald (May 25, 2005), Menino’s campaign employed city
workers taking their vacation days as volunteers to collect signatures,
which resulted in his significant signature tally.
Hennigan was quoted in The Boston Herald commenting that she wasn't
intimidated by the Menino juggernaut, “We had individuals who didn't
have to fear for their jobs' collecting signatures,” she said, referring
to reports that city workers took vacation days to collect signatures
for Menino.
