The Black Political Task Force announced yesterday
it is endorsing Councilor Maura A. Hennigan for mayor, contending
she can better represent people of color in Boston than Mayor
Thomas M. Menino.
''Councilor Hennigan has the ability to admirably
represent citizens from all walks of life and from every neighborhood
in Boston," said Lloyd H. King, president of the task force.
James Cofield, who works in Hennigan's campaign, is treasurer
of the task force.
Also yesterday, 13 state and local officials announced
their endorsement of Menino. The group includes Suffolk County
Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral, state Senator Jarrett T. Barrios of
Cambridge, state Representative Jeffrey Sanchez of Jamaica Plain,
and Councilor Rob Consalvo.
The Black Political Task Force also endorsed reelection
for Councilor at Large Felix D. Arroyo and Councilor Chuck Turner,
and the election of Sam Yoon for councilor at large and Gibran
Rivera for councilor, District 6.
Rivera is running against Councilor John M. Tobin
Jr. Yoon is one of eight candidates vying for four at-large council
seats.
Councilor Paul J. Scapicchio, whose district includes
East Boston, Charlestown, the North End, and Beacon Hill, also
announced his endorsement of Yoon.
Yoon said it was unwise ''for any candidate, especially
a political newcomer," to endorse a mayoral candidate.
